It's weird using Blogger again.

It's been ages since I posted and will be ages until I post again.

If you're still wandering by this site, it's not being maintained by anyone, anymore.

Alot of the blogs you see on the left have moved or don't exist anymore.

I'm posting today because of the Pepys Project: I'll be doing on that site what I was doing on this site - pointing out some of the underblogdexed blogs.

A Z-lister At Heart
Hey there. I was one of those people given permission to post (but not mess with the template) awhile back in hopes of lettin ya'll know about new blogs. Or newly found blogs. So I thought I'd take this moment to tell you about Joan. She asked to be added to the list of z-listers sometime in August. Her's is the most recent post in Z-List forum. She's even got a button to this lil page on her site.

And goddezzbidches.blogspot.com is the home of an RN. Now that's kewl. Alright, so I'm a nerd who's too into her job, but seriously, don't you respect nurses? (I work for SEIU, the largest healthcare union in the country.) But enough about me. Back to tellin you why you should check out goddezzbidches. Well, for one, she gives you rules on how to properly stalk her. And she has comments. And she's already mad popular, so you should jump on the bandwagon, eh? (She admits to being a counterwhore, and I have to admit to being counterjealous.)

I'm terrible with hipping you to new blogs. How about a really cool tool for you to keep a set of links without having to go into your template every time?
It's called BlogRolling. It works wonders. Here's what this free script does:

It's a fully functional and customizable linklist that you can add to or subtract from with a mouseclick. No more copy/paste/test/post and publish silliness.
Comes with a cool bookmark feature so you can add a site on the fly. No more link mining. It's really very cool.
You can determine what you want it to look like, order of listing of sites, and even see when sites have been updated.
All you need to add to your site for it to work is the script that it given to you to cut/paste when you first set it up.

BlogRolling is a very cool thing. Give it a test drive. You don't have to commit to it, but I think once you see how easy it is to work, you'll love it.

An end to an era here at z-list.

Mike Cooties has retired. Lemme tell you a bit about him. He's always been a passionate person. He's one of my first reads when I started mine in August of last year. I read him daily still.
When Tina conceived z-list it was what it was....a place for people to meet, get together, share ideas, posts, news, or whatever, and just keep in touch.

There's no doubt that there has been detractors. Controversy, yeah. And that a lot of that was due to the viewpoint that z-list wasn't much more than a half-assed idea that never truly blossomed into anything other than a place to ask for "membership" or grab a button.
Well, it was talked about quite a bit behind the scenes. We discussed more what z-list shouldn't be than what it should. The primary worry was that it would turn into what people who were using it didn't want it to be. Such a vague guideline to run something like z-list was ultimately its undoing.

Although Mike did a huge amount of work regarding z-list, including setting up and maintaining this blog, as well as posting links to unknown or lesser known blogs, he'd be the first to tell you that it was for the z-listers that wanted it. There have been quite a few people to come and go here.

In a conversation recently it was brought up that although we wished we could be more focused on what this was all about, we did have our own blogs, our own lives, and our own interests that were separate from z-list.

I finally DIDN'T put the last nail in Mike's coffin (I believe) when I tried to post the other day and totally DIDN'T wrecked the template.....something I'm really good at, by the way....and yes, something that was totally accidental as well. But I KNOW that it didn't affect him, and that HE CERTAINLY WOULDN'T GET MAD ABOUT ME SAYING SO OR ANYTHING....

So now we're at a new fork in the road. There are things that probably haven't been brought up or discussed about where or what the z-list could be. If you have any ideas, want to be able to post on this z-blog, or just would like to point out stuff, how about leaving a comment here.

Z-list isn't dead, but running around on one good leg isn't necessarily being alive either. How about it?

It was the end of November, 2001 when Tina coined the term 'Z-list'. It was her response to a piece Eric did on popular blogs, sometimes called the 'A-list'. A few people discussed her post, and when I saw their blog entries I snuck in here and created the Z-list Blog.

More than a half-year later, and the Z-list has grown from a half-dozen to 140 blogs. Eventually, Z-list went A-list - not bad, considering the growth was due entirely to word-of-mouth and a button here and there.

I don't know what will happen to the Z-list when I stop posting, but we're going to find out soon; this is my last post.

The project seems to have wound itself down, people have moved on, traffic has slowed (really, really slowed), and my desire to ferret out the unknown blogs which surround you has faded.

I don't know whether the chats you see listed to the right will continue. It's summer now - Z-list's first summer - and what we weren't doing when this started, we're doing now. The sunshine beckons, and water calls, warm air entices us - the world beyond the front door screams for us to pass through, and experience something beyond a few mouse clicks.

You have 140 blogs to your left, and many more recorded in the archives of this blog. You would be doing yourself a big favour if you clicked here, linked there and moved about in the world of the Z-list blog - blogs which may not rank high on Blogdex, but which are no less worthy of your attention, and worth your time.

One of the coolest resources I've seen in a long time, and something that can be used by anybody with a blog or a site or anyplace looking for a handy way to harvest your links.
Take it from me....a link list can get so quickly out of control that you spend the better part of your adult life adding to it and changing it and ridding it of the dead links. It's a nightmare.

Blogrolling solves that problem. You make your initial links on a page YOU can customize, add a bit of code and you are on your way!!

Here's the cool part: you can add a link while you're surfing without having to get into your blogging interface! You can do it on the fly. It's totally cool. Go there and check it out. It's worth it.

Since I made the move from Blogger to Greymatter to Movable Type over the last few months I've always been on the lookout for some good sources for help. Yeah, they all have help sections, but they're written in another language from what I can see. So I go to people that can write for MY pea-brain.
Scriptygoddess is a group of really fantastic MT bloggers who really know their stuff. They come up with little helpful scripts for MT users that make all the difference in the world. PLUS they have a forum for questions that they actually answer!
MovableBlog is a really good place to get more modifications to your MT script.

Yeah....don't have MT? That's okay. I'm gonna post up some Blogspot help sites soon. If you know of any, toss 'em into the comments.

Hola! Batchat is on for tonight! 9:00pm central! I'm posting how I get there - I never can find my way in through the zlist link - makes my pokey dialup crash in a most unhappy manner. Otherwise use Faith's method she describes below. Some have said that mine's the more roundabout way - which could be so! Alas! Nevertheless, here's how I find my way:

Go to the Spinchat site.
Log in, or sign up for a name and then log in.
After you're in click the chatrooms link on the left... somewhere over there.
From the pulldown menu (somewhere on the page, upper middle-ish) select ALL or Temporary Rooms.
Scroll down and look for BatChat zlistish.

Oh and if we're talking about strange things - 40 ft. high sentient haggis for instance - just hang around a bit and you'll realize that no, they're not trying to be coherant and they're not really as insane as they sound.

I am a Dull and Simple Lad

It's not his name, but while I was looking at David Watson's blog I couldn't stop the Jam's version of the Kink's song 'David Watts' running through my head. He (David Watson) seems to know a great deal about the techincal thingamahoobies behind blogs. I hope I'm not the only one having trouble with the single pixel links.

JustinGeller's is one of 280 places on the internet using the phrase, 'The details of my life are quite inconsequential'. Justin is in a rock/ska/country/emo/bebop/bluegrass/pop/acapella fusion group called 'GFS'. When Justin went to summer camp, all of his underwear had the initials 'JG' on the wasteband. Read his site, and you'll know why that may not have been a good thing.

I was going to provide a link to her site anyway, but the fact that Missy Williams (Metal Hair Queen) thinks 'Star Trek:TNG' rocks tells me she deserves another link.

I thougght my eyes werre deceiving mme when I saw Paullete Del Porto's blogg. I cann only guess at her reasoning for the unnusual spelling: the other version of the word was already in use. I was talking to mike cooties earlier. I thought I might do some more posting on here of some of the sites I like. I mentioned that I was hesitant to post here because I didn't want to steal the airtime from other posts. Yeah, I have a hard time on collaborative blogs because I'm such a friggin' blabbermouth.
Miscellaneous BS is a collaborative site done by Sophie and Bazil. I dig places like this. They don't step on each other's toes, they seem to do some cool communicating through it, and it looks like they read each other.

2HaTs is the log of an israeli girl living in canada (calgary, to be specific - the birthplace of mike, aka cooties). it's a fascinating blog, because although she's lived in canada for three years, she remains in close contact via the internet with family back home.

following the links from z-list is like driving down route 66...

you can get from point Z to point A in a few clicks, but along the way you can turn left or right, stop for a minute, chat for a while, stay for the night.

it's not about being in a group, or being in a 'clique'. it's not about sticking it to the 'a-list' or the 'e-litist'.

it's about having something to say. it's about telling us what it's like to live in dallas, or tulsa, or london, or hong kong. it's about describing some cool beach in australia, or some slick little bar in paris. it's about some wonderful soup you've created, or your dreams of being a diplomat.

when tina coined the term z-list, she wasn't saying 'shove it up jason's ass' ... she was saying 'i have something to say, too!'.

z-list is, as it has always been, a means for you to find blogs you might otherwise not know exist.

z-list isn't about being important, or being popular; z-list is about being.

if being part of this big z-list thing rewards you with new friends - awesome. if it rewards you with some new, wonderful way of adding things to your site - awesome. if it rewards you with the support you need for the troubles you're enduring - doubley awesome.

if z-list is simply getting together for a chat every other day - every other week ...

awesome.

z-list is not a thing, it's not a group, it's not a webring or even an association.

z-list is us.

z-list is the thousands of us who got together one day, by ourselves, and said 'i have something i want to tell you...'

frailty.org is a collection of actual notebooks, kept by the site's creator, and (i presume) transcribed verbatim to her website.

the design of the site is unique, and the content inviting.

if you have a blog/diary/journal online, add the URL to the pepys project.

the purpose of the project is to index blogs/diaries/journals by geographic location, and then country.

the idea was developed while i was looking for sites to add to this blog, and one night, i got caught up in the daily life of some girl in malaysia.

her triviata was so interesting to me that i decided it was interesting enough to create a way for everyone to get involved.

Possible Chatroom Problems

Speaking of the chatroom ... there appears to be a problem with folks showing up and finding themselves alone when in actuality there are several folks in the room. I'm not sure what is causing this "empty room" syndrome, but I'm sending in a report to the sweet folks at Bravenet to see if we can get the problem fixed.

Just be aware that if you do find yourself in this situation that it is probably some sort of mess-up cause the host is always there. Some folks may find it helpful to close both the chat and browser window and then try to re-enter, but if that doesn't work don't despair, we will get it fixed or find a new service.

Hey.
There have been some changes to Z-list lately. Most notably to some people leaving for personal reasons and some others coming on, or to be added. Thought I'd let you know that.

I don't know how long it's been since this thing started, but I'm glad it did. I've met a lot of cool people through it. To the newer folks who may not be aware of what's going on, lemme try to explain.

This started as a place for people who were starting out to...start. Yeah, there were some different individual reasons in the beginning, but overall the feeling was that there are people like us out there, and we should get together. So we started it. We didn't really have a plan outside of making a place where people could post up and be able to check out others. It's gotten pretty big. Sure, at last count it was in the 70's for registered post authors on the z-list board, but that doesn't include the others who chose to particpate silently. They have every right to. This is for you. What you make it is up to you.

What to expect. You'd figure after all this time we'd have some kind of idea what you can expect. We don't. We know that you can do what you'd like, spend as much or as little time as you want on other people's weblogs, or go whole-hog and make buttons, banners, and get a tattoo. Whatever you want.
Is there some benefit? Can't guarantee that you'll increase your readership, but then I don't know if you want to. I try to visit as many blogs as I can. It's fun. I urge others to take some time and cruise the blogs. Even if you're new....once you post your name, check out some of the other ones. You might find a good friend.

Then what's the point? It's to exist for you. It's not to be put on some list or mentioned in some awards show. It's just to find others. As different as you think and feel you can pretty much believe that someone sporting a z-list button is more like you than you think. After all, you came here for a reason. Maybe it's the same reason as someone else.

Some cool stuff's coming. Some new people are gonna be doing stuff behind the scenes to help keep this thing running and fun. It'll work out. If something's bugging you, lemme know. Or, post it up in the forum. I check it all the time. Thanks. hoopty

I've been meaning for a long time to check out Punk Princess... I first saw her on Hoopty's blog and I've been meaning to go. So I'm in the forum and I click on her link and start reading her blog. A normal blog just like any blog...a sweet one... Oh, she got reviewed by the Weblog Review... how nice. She's very happy about it... Then I click on the comments...

Unfortunately (or fortunately), she uses Snor Comments and cannot edit or delete comments. Some doofus made a very nasty remark about her "insulting Tori Amos" in some way and that she thought everyone would vote and vote until PP had the lowest rated blog on the review. How juvenile. If this *was* Tori Amos who was personally insulted, it would be one thing. But this is just some fan who's pissed off that everyone doesn't like whoever *she* thinks is great.

Okay...now the idle threat was enough to get -me- pissed at the person commenting... And then it got worse.

Go to the blog. See the comment. Get pissed. DO SOMETHING. Click the link and give Punk Princess a 5... I did. No one should have to deal with being called a DB...

Just wanted to say that this thing really seems to be taking off!!! Woo-hoooo!!! It's really cool to check out the Z-Listers and see they've already linked their buttons. Mind if I address a couple of things?
First, there are so many people to thank. It's one of those things where the only way to properly thank everyone would be to take every link to the left and every one in the forum and make a massive thank-you list.
The people that built this page (and those who inspired it to be built, supported the idea, came up with the idea, or just stumbled in for a drink) are all of us. It's a culmination of everyone, really.
There's a bit of confusion regarding how this Z-List thing works, and it's my fault for confusing you. On that note, I'd like the opportunity to confuse you more. You don't have to register with EZ-Board to be a Z-Lister. Hell, you don't even need a button. You don't even need to read this!!! All you have to do is be yourself and do your own thing.
Yeah...EZ-Board. It ain't that easy, is it? Well, I'm hoping this weekend to take care of some of the things that are going on with it, like paying to get rid of those popups (whoever invented the popup is on my short-list), do some general maintenance to the board, and putting in a suggestion box so you have a place to leave ideas. It's encouraged that you do, since we won't know what you like and don't like through osmosis.

blog about a-lists and a-listers. The g.O.M. posted an awesome story about the rise and fall of the a-list on his unbelievable blog I read that story and got pretty angry. Seemed to me that the A listers were very "full of themselves"! My next post went on and on and on about a-lists and b-lists.One thing led to another-------the red-headed step children of the blog world came together.

Ya know Mike, at first I thought the link was some kind of joke. Then I thought the site was probably about one of the pony-girls one hears about in chatrooms? What's a Z-List?
It's someplace for bloggers to go to post their site for viewing, get ideas from others, ask for help, leave ideas, leave help, or whatever. In other words, it's what you make it.

Who's on Z-list?
Right now it is the people that showed initial interest in it. Many of them have never seen each other's blogs, so this is a great example of a use for this site. If you're curious as to the type of people who are here, go ahead and browse the links to your left.

What's the cost?
Nothing. No hidden fees...no credit cards. Nothing. Zilch.

Where do I pick up one of those radical buttons that I've seen simply everywhere?
